A Gospel Refresher

I recently received (for the umpteenth time) a forwarded email about gun rights called “A Firearm Refresher Course”.  While it was an interesting email containing very pertinent and powerful information, if tomorrow the government outlawed ownership of any kind of gun it would be my responsibility as a Christian to turn in every gun I own. Furthermore, no lasting eternal benefit is gained by gun ownership (or restriction, for that matter).  While I am very grateful for the second amendment,  the issues at stake in our nation are much larger than owning guns, and the right to bear arms is not a real solution to any of them. The issues at stake in our nation are issues of sin and rejection of the Word of God. With that in mind, here is a little gospel refresher for you.

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth.” Romans 1:16

“These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also; Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus” Acts 17:6-7

“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:” John 1:12

“If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature, old things are passed away behold all things are become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17

“But God who is rich in mercy, for His great love wherewith He loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved).” Ephesians 2:4-5

“Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;” Colossians 2:12-13

“So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.” Romans 8:8-9

And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.” 2 Corinthians 6:9-11

Everyone is deeply troubled by the situation in our nation and world. Many brilliant minds are bent to the solution of our economic, social and political woes. A large portion of our population is watching with trepidation the decisions being made by all three branches of our government. Others are preying on those fears to manipulate people and promote personal agendas. Many believers have very strong political viewpoints. Viewpoints concerning gun control, free speech, poverty, abortion, homosexuality, marriage and the environment. Many of these issues involve Biblical commands and principles, so believers should step forward to address these issues and call our nation to a more Biblical stand. The solution is not the defense of gun rights, fighting for free speech or even just protesting abortion. The only way to address the issues in our nation is through the gospel. Frankly, who cares if I can carry a concealed weapon if the guy I shoot with it dies and goes to hell? Who cares if I can say anything I want if no one hears from my lips the gospel? The gospel is powerful to change lives, the gospel is the thing that we must be expending our energies to promote and defend. Everything, absolutely everything, in our socio-political troubles is secondary to the proclamation of the gospel.
