300,000!

February 12, 2011

Reaching the 300,000 mile mark on I-94, near Kenosha, WI

In March of 2004, the Lord graciously provided, through the kind assistance of others, for us to purchase a much needed vehicle.  We did our research and decided that a Subaru Outback was the best car for us at that particular time.  One afternoon, we drove up to the dealership, test drove a car, haggled, couldn’t come to terms and were on the verge of leaving when the salesman mentioned a car they had just gotten that morning on trade in.  It was still in the shop getting cleaned up, but I went back looked at the car and decided it was the car we wanted.  Since I had to be back in Manistique for church, we made the deal and I left to make the trip home while Ruth waited for the dealer to finish prepping the car so she could drive it home.

Now, seven years and nearly 200,000 miles later, we are still driving that same Subaru Outback.  In that time, we have not had a single major mechanical breakdown that left us stranded.  Not once.  Only twice have we had to limp the car home for repairs, and one of those times was a 1,000 mile trip- some limping.  On February 11, on the way home from a conference in Indiana, we watched the odometer break the 300,000 mile mark.  It is a testament to the quality of manufacture by Subaru, but far more importantly it is a testament to the incredible provision and sustaining grace of our God.

Since we purchased that car, it has taken us into 18 states (Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Pennsylvania), carried us to ministry in Manistique, Marquette, Negaunee, Shingleton, Newberry, Curtis, Escanaba, Limestone, Ontonagon, Hancock, Witch Lake, Lake Ellen, Jackson, Hadley, Greenup, Selmer, Matthews, Munising, Phelps, Phillips and Dunbar, and it has sped us along on many trips to many, many different communities along the way. In all of that, God has wonderfully taken care of us.

When we purchased the car, our desire and prayer was to be able to keep using it until it had 300,000 miles on it.  God has blessed and answered that request.  Now, every additional mile is “exceeding abundantly above all we ask or think.”  We are so grateful to our God for His care for us, providing us with the vehicle we needed and sustaining that vehicle throughout many long, sometimes very hard, miles.  Praise God from whom all blessings flow.
